DESCRIPTION: APW - L. Goddard & Son, serial #293, verge fusee, 55mm, unmarked silver OF pair cases, white enamel dial, pierced gold hands, KWKS, verge escapement, gilt mvt, balance cock with elegantly pierced and engraved balance cock, s#293. An excellent example from this historically important early American maker, Luther Goddard was the first American to achieve a sizable scale of watchmaking output. Based on known examples it appears he and his sons successfully produced a bit more than 500 watches in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts in the years prior to 1817. This example features an "L. Goddard & Son" signature, as opposed to the "L. Goddard" signature seen with the preceding lot, and from known examples it appears this signature change took place somewhere within the 200s serial range. From the Wing family collection.
CONDITION: Mvt: Running, fine-plus cosmetic mvt condition overall, good gilt tone, main plate with some concentric rub marks inside regulator index, some typical mild fine to micro-fine scratches elsewhere, balance wheel with some scattered small oxide spots; dial with hls radiating from center, perimeter hls between 5 and 6, small perimeter fractures at 11:30, small surface nick inside 11:30, small edge chip near 7, small surface flake at 5; excellent hands; outer case shows little wear, an attractive dark patina, short scratch at left perimeter of rear above latch spring seat, numerous scattered dings to bezel with greatest profusion at lower portion, button latch good; inner case shows light wear, profuse fine to micro-fine scratches, few dings to bezel; bow pivots freely; domed glass bull's-eye crystal with scattered short scratches.
ESTIMATE: $5000 - $9000
